“Dispossession” by Amar Mehta seems to be an epic fantasy novel blending swords, sorcery, and provocative themes. Here are my thoughts:

The opening line immediately sets an ominous, fantastical tone by describing a spirit possessing one’s mind and body through the power of a sword. As a reader, this mystical hook surrounding the diamond sword grabs my attention.

The premise of Nildor, a young elf discontent with his peace-loving community’s ways, forming a forbidden partnership with the seductive spirit Lady Leera – who also killed his father – is deliciously complex. I’m intrigued by this morally gray plot line hinting at dark desires and conflicted allegiances.

Nildor joining forces with Lady Leera to try to save his community from the violent, religiously motivated Wulgars raises the stakes significantly. The clash of cultures and differing philosophies on war and violence has me curious to see how this inter-species conflict unfolds.

Beyond the gripping storyline, I’m drawn to the rich world-building details like the elven Lorar community, the warmongering Wulgar race seeking “Welthe” through killing, and the overall aura of mysticism surrounding Lady Leera and her diamond sword’s powers. Well-rendered fantasy settings are a must for my immersion.

The dark, mature themes of violence, forbidden partnerships, and possible anti-heroic motivations also intrigue me. I appreciate when fantasy doesn’t shy away from weighty, morally ambiguous subject matter amidst the swords and sorcery spectacle.

Overall, “Dispossession” seems to deftly blend classic fantasy tropes like elves and mystical weaponry with more modernly gritty themes and narrative complexity. The enticing premise of Nildor walking a blurred line between light and dark has me excited to experience this rich, imaginative world Amar Mehta has constructed. It promises to be an engrossing, thought-provoking fantasy tale.
