GLOBAL WARMING GREENHOUSE GASES AND RELATED FACTORS By William Petruk

This paper integrates the factors reported in the scientific literature about global warming caused by greenhouse gases and global temperatures on planet Earth since it was created 4.6 billion years ago. According to scientific reports, the terrestrial and ocean surfaces are warmed by infrared radiation of solar energy. The earth’s atmosphere is heated by infrared radiation from the terrestrial and ocean surfaces, as well as from solar energy, and by the action of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide and methane (natural gas). A general correlation exists between the average earth’s atmospheric temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide content.

The current concept of global warming is “A rapid increase in earth’s surface temperature.” Scientific reports show that rapid increases in the earth’s surface temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide began in about 1980; hence we are experiencing global warming. It is generally accepted that climate changes such as extreme storms, flooding, hurricanes, extreme blizzards, increased glacial melting, forest fires, and drought tend to happen when global warming occurs.

GLOBAL WARMING GREENHOUSE GASES AND RELATED FACTORS By William Petruk

About the Author

William Petruk was a Canadian Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources research scientist from 1960 to 1995. He investigated the correlations between mineral characteristics and metallurgical processes for producing metals from ores and determined the effects of the functions on the environment. His work guided and stimulated metallurgical engineers in optimizing their operations to improve metal recoveries. He progressed through the research scientist ranks to a senior research scientist. He found two new minerals, langisite and larosite, and A unique mineral was named petrukite in recognition of his work. Dr. Petruk is recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions to the mining industry. He has been invited worldwide to conduct lectures and short courses at research institutes and universities. While in the Canadian Department, Dr. Petruk published 134 papers in refereed journals, books, and conference proceedings and edited and co-edited nine books for the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers. He also made about 160 technical presentations at meetings of technical societies; and has written nearly 400 internal and industrial confidential reports. In 1983 he developed the MP-SEM-IPS image analysis system for characterizing the physical properties of minerals.
