About the Author

Jay Alden Bailey: A Life of Resilience and Introspection

Born in Portland, Connecticut, Jay Alden Bailey’s early life was marked by dramatic turns that would shape his worldview and future path. His childhood, split between Durham, Connecticut and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, initially reflected a life of privilege uncommon for the 1960s and ’70s.

Early Adversity

Bailey’s life took a tumultuous turn when his father kidnapped him and his older brother during a bitter divorce, hiding them away in Meriden, Connecticut. Told their mother was dead, the boys were eventually found by authorities and temporarily placed in an orphanage. This harrowing experience ended with their reunion with their mother, but it came at a great cost. They settled in Durham, Connecticut, facing poverty and the harsh judgment of their mother’s Irish-Catholic family.

Coming of Age in Turbulent Times

Growing up in the socially turbulent 1960s and ’70s, Bailey matured quickly. He found solace in the forests behind his home, developing a profound appreciation for nature that would influence his future career choices. This period also cultivated his tendency to question authority and conventional wisdom, traits that would define his approach to life and work.

Forging His Own Path

After high school, Bailey explored various entry-level jobs, gaining insights into small business practices. By age twenty, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to self-employment, starting with a residential tree service. Over four decades, he diversified his skills, venturing into real estate, construction, and landscape architecture.

A Philosophical Outlook

Bailey’s journey has been characterized by a positive outlook and a willingness to trust others – qualities that have been both his greatest asset and, at times, his biggest challenge. His experiences have fostered a unique perspective on life and business, which he now shares through his writing.

From Arborist to Author

Today, Jay Alden Bailey channels his diverse life experiences into his work as an author. Drawing from a rich background that includes arboriculture, construction, landscape architecture, oil painting, and interior design, he crafts stories and anecdotes infused with satirical humor and philosophical insights.

Bailey attributes his perseverance and love for language to his mother, an avid reader and library advocate. Her influence shines through in his writing, where he skillfully blends his varied life experiences with a keen understanding of human nature.

Through his books, Bailey invites readers to explore the complexities of trust, the value of questioning norms, and the enduring power of resilience in the face of adversity.
