ONE STEP AHEAD BY PEGGY SHERMAN
Annie Bingham ended her boyfriend’s life in a fit of rage. She has to leave Lexington, Kentucky before her crime is discovered. She flees by bus to the tranquil small town of Howe, Arizona, where she settles. As Annie stitches together a new life with a new job and new friends, she is finally able to relax, believing she has escaped her past.
But when an acquaintance in Howe uncovers her darkest secret, Annie’s fragile happiness is shattered. As news of her presence in Howe gains the attention of determined FBI agents Milo Cates and Damon Washington, Annie once again finds herself having to leave her home and start a new life in another town far away.
Determined to right her wrongs, she sets out on a path of good deeds. As she navigates a world shadowed by her past, can she find peace, or will her past continue to define her future?
Well, well, my fellow indie book lovers – do I have a page-turner for you! “One Step Ahead” by Peggy Sherman is the book that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go until the last word.
First of all, can we talk about Annie Bingham? This is a protagonist who is complex, flawed, and utterly fascinating. Sure, she may have ended her boyfriend’s life in a rage (yikes!), but as she tries to start anew in Howe, Arizona, you can’t help but root for her. Sherman has a way of making even the most morally gray characters feel deeply human.
But just when you think Annie might be able to put her past behind her, BAM! Her darkest secret is uncovered, and suddenly, the FBI is hot on her trail. Agents Milo Cates and Damon Washington are like bloodhounds, relentless in their pursuit of justice. And poor Annie is left to run once again, always one step ahead of her demons.
What I love about this book is its grappling with the idea of redemption. Can we ever truly escape our past mistakes, or are we forever defined by them? As Annie sets out on a path of good deeds, trying to right her wrongs, you can’t help but wonder if it’s enough. Sherman keeps you guessing until the end, which makes this book addictive.
So, my fellow indie book junkies, if you’re looking for a thriller that will keep you up past your bedtime, “One Step Ahead” is the book for you. Just be warned – you might want to keep the lights on while reading this one!
