SPLIT: a life shared – Surviving the Unimaginable, One Personality at a Time

How does a child endure unspeakable abuse? She becomes many.

Maggie Walters’ memoir “SPLIT” takes you on a harrowing journey through the fragmented mind of a survivor. As a young adult, Maggie struggles with unpredictable anger and social difficulties, unaware of the chaos within. It’s only when she finds a trusted therapist that the truth emerges: she’s not alone in her own mind.

Diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder (now known as Dissociative Identity Disorder), Maggie discovers:

  • It wasn’t her who survived the abuse – it was Annie, and countless other ‘alters’
  • Her mind created an entire internal world to protect her from unbearable trauma
  • Living a ‘normal’ life means constantly managing the voices and chaos in her head

“SPLIT” offers a raw, unflinching look at:

  • The incredible resilience of the human mind
  • The long-lasting effects of childhood trauma
  • The journey towards self-acceptance and healing

Perfect for readers of “The Body Keeps the Score” and “Sybil,” this memoir asks:

  • How do you build a life when your very self is shattered?
  • Can you ever truly heal from such profound trauma?
  • What does ‘normal’ mean when your mind is shared by many?

As Maggie navigates marriage, motherhood, and daily life, she must constantly reconcile her present with her fractured past.

Dive into this extraordinary tale of survival, self-discovery, and the triumph of the human spirit. Will you walk in Maggie’s shoes and see the world through her kaleidoscope mind?

About the Author

Maggie lives in the Northern Rivers of NSW, where she spends her days developing her writing skills and a committed mother to three young adult children. After meeting her husband, she immigrated to Australia from the U.S. and spent the bulk of her career in various marketing roles before returning to her long-held love of the written word. Expression through words has become a driving passion in her life, a tool for healing her own abusive past.

SPLIT is Maggie’s debut memoir, and an early version was long-listed for the 2022 Richelle Emerging Writers Prize.

As a trauma survivor, she shares her commitment to wholeness, while confronting stereotypes surrounding Multiple Personality Disorder/Dissociative Identity Disorder. She educates and encourages others to break down the barriers and stigmas around mental health, sharing her story on TV, Radio and in the press. She recently appeared on The Project and had a major feature piece in last weekend’s Saturday Telegraph.

Maggie is an active member of Byron Writers Festival, and belongs to several writing groups that meet regularly and continue to nurture her craft. She will be appearing on stage at Byron Writers Festival this year, talking about SPLIT, her publishing journey and encouraging others to change the narrative around mental health.
