The Devil’s Secret By Mark Homan
The Devil’s Secret is a nonfiction book about how “emotional illness” is passed down through generations in even the most functional families. From our first encounters with our parents, we begin to take on the same traits through repetitious behavior and conditioning. Most parents believe they are passing on good qualities to their children when in actuality, they are unknowingly passing on many bad ones. And while abusive families come to mind first as examples of this situation, the condition is with us all to one degree or another.
This book breaks down how in most cases, the illness goes unaddressed because of pride, ignorance, stubbornness, denial, and other psychological defense mechanisms. It explores how most of us are entirely unaware of the illness as we pass it on to our children. And even if we are made aware of our condition, most will choose to deny or conceal it. In fact, most people will never discover how they were negatively affected because of how efficiently the secret has been kept by those who came before them.
Stories from the author’s childhood show how the illness manifests in our lives so the reader can relate to their situation. Finally, it answers how we can turn our lives around through a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
The Devil’s Secret attempts to enlighten those who have not yet been made aware of the secret and give encouragement and direction to correct it. Many suffer from depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol abuse, anger, lack of self-control, addiction, and many other conditions. Most will never know why they are affected in such ways. And just as a parent is in denial about their own behavior, they also refuse to acknowledge their child’s behavior has anything to do with themselves. So instead of looking to themselves as the source of their children’s dysfunction, they blindly blame their child’s inappropriate behavior.
While enlightenment is the first step, taking action is how we can make headway in correcting our emotional illness. Our dedication to Truth and love is paramount, and our relationship with God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit becomes the answer to rising above our emotional illness. Emotional illness is part of all of our lives. None of us are free from it. By facing our illness and utilizing psychological and spiritual resources, we can begin the process of turning our lives around. Truth, enlightenment, answers, direction, and inspiration await the reader in “The Devil’s Secret.”
