Book Description

William Martens always dreamed of leaving Syracuse, the blue-collar town where he was born and raised. So when his widowed grandfather, Isaiah, invites him to live with him in his mansion and attend nearby Cornell University, William jumps at the chance.

But odd things are happening at his grandfather’s mansion.

The first time William sees a young boy in an upstairs window, he thinks his mind is playing tricks on him. But that’s only the beginning. Multiple sightings of a ghostly boy and girl who whisper warnings, faucets running with blood, and a mysterious mirror that harbors an evil spirit soon drive William away…until years later, he inherits the mansion and moves back in with his family.
Unfortunately, the ghosts haven’t gone anywhere…and bear a striking resemblance to William’s family.

As William searches for clues about the mansion’s previous inhabitants, he makes a horrifying discovery. As he falls deeper under the spell of the dark force the house harbors, can he break the curse before history repeats itself?

Book Review

Ever notice how the grandest houses often harbor the darkest secrets? Len Handeland’s “The Haunting of Wellsley Manor” masterfully plays with this time-honored horror tradition, delivering a fresh and deeply personal take on the haunted house genre that kept me up way past my bedtime.

At its core, this is a story about escaping the past only to find yourself drawn inexorably back to it. Our protagonist William Martens thinks he’s found his golden ticket when his grandfather offers him a chance to live in a mansion and attend Cornell University. It’s the classic American dream of social mobility – until it transforms into a nightmare.

What sets this book apart is how Handeland weaves familial relationships into the supernatural horror. The ghosts aren’t random spirits but bear unsettling resemblances to William’s own family, creating an atmosphere thick with generational trauma and unresolved history. The mansion itself becomes a character, with its blood-stained faucets and that particularly spine-chilling mirror that serves as a portal to ancient evil.

The author demonstrates remarkable restraint in his ghost story mechanics. Rather than relying on cheap jumps scares, he builds tension through subtle details – a glimpse of a child’s face, whispered warnings, and the growing sense that something is fundamentally wrong with Wellsley Manor. When William returns years later with his own family, you want to reach through the pages and stop him, even as you understand why he must go back.

The pacing is particularly effective, starting with small unexplainable occurrences and building to a crescendo as William uncovers the dark history of the house’s previous inhabitants. Handeland has clearly studied the masters of the genre while finding his own voice – there are echoes of Shirley Jackson’s psychological acuity and Michael McDowell’s Southern Gothic atmosphere, but the story remains distinctly his own.

This book will especially appeal to readers who enjoy their horror with a side of family drama and historical mystery. If you’re looking for pure shock value, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you appreciate slowly mounting dread, complex family dynamics, and mysteries that span generations, you’re in for a treat.
